Victor and Barbara Somerville own and operate Clearwater Dairy Farm on the outskirts of Juniper, New Brunswick. Their son recently joined the operation – making him the third generation to farm in this area.
Victor and Barbara are lucky. Some families that work in agriculture don’t have children who are interested in taking over the family farm. Many smaller operations have been repossessed by the bank, or sold off to developers.
The economic struggles of Juniper and the surrounding areas are a reflection of a larger problem. The rural way of life in Canada is slowing becoming extinct.
